GuanajuatoGuanajuato is the capital of Mexico’s Guanajuato State and one of the most important historical and cultural colonial cities in Mexico. Located in the central part of Mexico, south of the high Mexican plateau and just 5-hours drive northwest of Mexico City, Guanajuato has a pleasant climate with temperatures between 53F and 75F.

Guanajuato was found as a town in 1554, it became the world's leading silver-extraction centre in the 18th century. For centuries, Guanajuato was the wealthiest city in Mexico as its mines produced silver and gold in prodigious quantities. This historical influence can be seen in its 'subterranean streets' and the 'Boca del Inferno', a mineshaft that plunges a breathtaking1969 feet. The famous Underground Street, officially known as Calle Miguel Hidalgo is an amazing maze which follows the course of the old Guanajuato River, running nearly 1.86 miles beneath the city.
The town's beautiful Baroque and neoclassical buildings resulted from the prosperity of the mineGuanajuatos in the 1800s. The churches of La Compañía and La Valenciana are considered to be among the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture in Central and South America. Guanajuato offers many beautiful colonial buildings, modern museums, silver mines, a popular university, exquisite regional cuisine and a variety of activities to be enjoyed.

The town is a maze of cobblestone streets and alleys that wind around steep hillsides upon a small ravine, opening into vistas of beautiful churches and small plazas. Visitors are charmed with its relaxed atmosphere, narrow paved streets and picturesque squares. Most of the passageways are largely pedestrians since modern traffic circumvents the narrow streets underground in massive stone tunnels and upon the riverbed past the basements of the core city.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1988. The city has no traffic lights or neon signs which makes it an enjoyable place for a peacefully stroll, while still maintaining plenty of life in its narrow streets.

Guanajuato has a versatile nightlife that features clubs, live concerts and a variety of artistic shows, such as the beautiful ballet, theater plays, quaint folklore presentations, opera and the rhythmic philharmonic orchestras, plus boxing matches and the famous Mexican wrestling. Famous "callejoneadas" (street parades), including music by student bands, can be seen around town. These bands depart from the stairs of Juarez Theater, accompanied by bottles of tequila.

Guanajuato is the ideal spot in Mexico to study Spanish, as it is a small and manageable popular university town. It will charm you with its rich colorful architecture and culture.
